Mark Rothko Art and Information Centre

The city hall of Daugavpils – the second largest city in Latvia, expects to create a centre of art and information, dedicated to the world famous artist Mark Rothko. The centre will be situated in the Arsenal building in the territory of the Daugavpils fortress - a historical monument.

Mark Rothko (Markuss Rotkovics) - the renowned abstractionist and expressionist, a founder of the abstractionism. He was born in Daugavpils 1903. His family immigrated to the USA, and Rothko lived and worked in New York until his death in 1970.

The Rothko Art Centre is an attempt to create a new product of cultural tourism in Latgale region.

The development potential of the Daugavpils fortress territory and the increasing interest of visitors, as well as the rooms and galleries of the fortress, create wide-range possibilities for regional tourism.

The cooperation between city hall and Rothko's children is confirmed by the agreement to use the name of the artist for the name of the new centre. It will also receive several originals by Rothko for future expositions.
