Andris Nelsons
“Authority, a strong sense of architecture and dramatic momentum, stylistic understanding, a clear technique, the ability to bring out many layers of fine detail, the sensitivity to hear his singers, and truck-loads of impetuous energy. Nelsons seems to have everything.”
Financial Times
The Latvian-born Andris Nelsons was appointed, aged 23, as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera in the 2003/04 season. A post he holds today, along with being newly appointed Principal Conductor of the Nordwest Deutsche Philharmonie Herford, from the 2006/07 season. These are achievements which, in the early stages of an international career, have already distinguished the name of Andris Nelsons as a name to watch.
Without exception, Andris Nelsons has been invited to return to every orchestra with whom he has made his debut. In the next two seasons, these include the Bayerische Rundfunk, Helsinki Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Hannover and Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin. Beyond that, the future already holds some significant debuts with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. Soloists Nelsons works with include Mischa Maisky, Mikhail Pletnev, Gidon Kremer, Håkan Hardenberger, Renaud Capuçon, Olli Mustonen, Sol Gabetta, Alban Gerhardt and Baiba Skride.
Andris Nelsons has made his USA debut with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and he has also taken the National Youth Orchestra of Germany on tour to South America in summer 2006, culminating in a performance back in Europe, at Berlin’s Konzerthaus.
In the opera house, Nelsons makes his German opera debut in January 2007 at Deutsche Oper Berlin with performances of La Bohème, followed by his debuts with Hamburg Opera in May/June 2008 conducting Turandot, and Frankfurt Opera in November 2008 conducting Boito’s Mefistofele. Forthcoming productions in Riga this season include Aida, La Traviata, La Bohème, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, The Queen of Spades and Walküre.
Andris Nelsons’ first commercial recording has just been released by ORFEO Records, featuring him conducting the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk and violinist Arabella Steinbacher, in a recording of Shostakovich’s two Violin Concertos.
In 2010, Nelsons will debut at the Bayreuth Festival with Wagner's opera "Lohengrin".
Born in Riga into a family of musicians, Andris Nelsons began his career in music as a trumpeter in the Latvian National Opera Orchestra and has also won many prizes for his singing. He was recipient of the prestigious Latvian Grand Music Award for outstanding achievement in music in 2001 and, after graduating in the same year, he went to St. Petersburg to study conducting with Professor Alexander Titov. During this time, Nelsons also attended masterclasses with Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula. He has been studying privately with Mariss Jansons since 2002. |
