Inese Galante

Inese Galante is a world-famous opera singer whose voice surprises with an incredibly wide range of vocal nuances ― from lyrical coloratura soprano that enchants with the extraordinary subtlety of its pianissimo gradations, to deep and timbrally full-bodied dramatic soprano. Galante has sung about 40 parts in opera productions, taken part in renditions of several large-scale vocal symphonic compositions and performed at the most prestigious opera theatres and concert halls of the world.

Inese Galante was born in 12 March, 1954 in Riga, in a musicians’ family. After secondary school she started her studies at the Department of Pharmacology of the now Medical Academy and, simultaneously, at the Jāzeps Mediņš College of Music under the guidance of her first vocal teacher Rašele Šulova. Having made a choice in favour of music, she graduated from the vocal class of Ludmila Rjabova-Brauna at the Latvian Academy of Music in 1982 and joined the Latvian National Opera as a solo artist frequently giving guest performances at the St.Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre.

From 1992 to 1999 Inese Galante was a member of the Manheim and Düsseldorf Deutsche Oper am Rhein opera companies. She is currently performing at the largest opera houses in Germany, France, Israel and the U.S.A. as well as in prestigious concert halls in Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Australia, United Kingdom and South Korea. In 1997 Inese Galante performed with Gegam Grigoryan at Mstislav Rostropovitch’s 70th birthday concert at Théâtre des Champs Élysées in France. In 2001 she sang with José Carreras in a concert in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and gave a recital at Kensington Palace in London.

Also in 2001 Inese Galante performed at recitals at the Moscow Kremlin but in 2002 she made her debut at the Bolshoi Theatre in Russia, in 2003 – at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and later that year at the Edinburgh and Liverpool Opera Theatres. In spring 2004 her debut at the Estonia Theatre took place.

Her "Debut" album has earned gold (1999) and platinum (2001) discs in Netherlands. In 2000 the BBC awarded her "Arietta" record the Best Album title in the category of classical music. The British Campion Records Company considers Inese Galante to be one of their stars ― in 2002 her album sales exceeded 200 000 copies. Her recordings of arias from operas by Tchaikovsky (BMG, the Covent Garden Opera Orchestra conducted by Neme Järvi) are praised as particularly expressive but the Tatyana letter scene has been pronounced by critics to be the best of the last twenty years.

Each year regardless of her busy schedule Inese Galante visits her hometown of Riga to give performances and take an active part in Latvian cultural life. The Summertime International Festival of Music is her brain-child.
