Chamber Music Though Latvians seem to prefer sweeping and monumental music, the intimate chamber style also has its aficionados and experiences a new surge of popularity every September with the opening of the new season. The perfect venue for performing this kind of music was the Wagner Hall, the former Riga German Theatre established on September 15, 1782 where Richard Wagner was the director and conductor for a period of two years. After many years of silence, the first concert took place on September 15, 1986in the newly restored hall. In recent years, chamber music has also been played at other locations — the Opera, theatres, etc.
A talented and creative propagator of 20th century music is conductor Normunds Šnē with his orchestra Rīgas kamermūziķi (Riga chamber players) founded in 1987. Now the followers of the chamber players is the new foudned State Chamber Orchestra (2006) - a professional and fixed unity of musicians led by Normunds Šnē
Riga Saxophone Quartet, the first promoter of saxophone music in Latvia led by Artis Sīmanis, always sounds fresh and artistically accomplished.
