Children tend to perceive everything as a serious game of life. Puppet theatres in Latvia work as entertaining means of education and instruction. The very first stage most Latvian theatre lovers have seen in their childhood is the one at the Puppet Theatre. The actor line-up has been changing but quite a few shows have stayed in the repertory for decades. The puppets are quite impressive at the State Puppet Theatre ― they are the product of teamwork by the designer, the sculptor and the engineer. One of the most distinguished puppet designers was Pāvils Šēnhofs. Private collectors are keen to obtain puppets as independent works of art once a show has been taken off the repertory.

There are two puppet theatres in Liepāja as well; the travelling Maska puppet theatre regularly tours the whole of Latvia and also gives performances abroad.
