The best productions by Latvian non-professional theatre companies are always plays dealing with life in the Latvian countryside. There are more than 100 community theatre companies in this country, and about 100 smaller amateur groups of enthusiasts who also play theatre ― mostly at rural recreation centres.

In the amateur theatre companies professional directors work with people who possess unschooled talent and are dedicated to theatre. They are unfamiliar with the canons of dramatics, and for this reason directors from professional theatres always attend festivals of amateur theatre. Sometimes they admit to feeling quite envious ― in a good way, of course.
