Alternative/Project Theatres
The youngest and most distinctive of alternative theatrical companies is Teātris bez jumta (Theater without a Roof) founded by Gaļina Poļiščuka. The director stages original plays by Latvian authors; she however has none of the reverence towards the classics displayed by most Latvian directors. In her productions the half-mythologized classical characters are people of flesh and blood, passionate and dynamic.

United Intimacy is headed by Viesturs Kairišs. Productions of this theater are like a contemporary, dynamic and provocative dialog with the modern day reality.

Kabata is a project theater, the oldest of Latvian alternative theater companies. It was founded in the 1980's and is frequented by those who favor children's plays, comedies or cabaret-style shows that can be enjoyed while sipping wine and even smoking in the new home of the Kabata theater, at the Austrumu Robeža (The Eastern Border) club.

The cornerstones of the Teātris TT theater company are a repertory of plays by Latvian contemporary authors and untraditional venues ― a music club, a small ship etc. The creative nucleus of the theater is formed by actress and producer Anna Putniņa and Lauris Gundars who is the director of practically all the productions.

Skatuve (The Stage) is one of the first independent theater companies in Latvia; it serves as a training ground for drama students of the Latvian Academy of Culture and its self-proclaimed mission is staging plays by world authors previously never produced in Latvia. The founder of the theater is director Anna Eižvertiņa.

Rīgas Bērnu un jauniešu muzikālais teātris (The Riga Children and Youth Musical Theater) "RīBēJa MuTe" is a project theater that was founded in 2005 by Riga City Council’s Culture Department. The theater has found its home at VEF Culture Palace. Its goal is to create a more diverse offer of plays for young audiences, by involving in production of plays children and youth; to create plays as bright adventures that would help children and youth not only experience the magic of theater but also develop their imagination and an open-minded way of thinking.

Rīgas Muzikālais Teātris (Riga Musical Theater) – a project theater, established in 2006 with the support of Riga City Council. Its aims to preserve and improve the best traditions of operetta, and develop them in accordance with contemporary world trends. The theater’s basic repertoire consists of classical operetta perfomances. The creative team – director Jānis Kaijaks, costume designer Elita Patmalniece, set designer Anita Znutiņa, choreographer Alberts Kivlenieks, conductor Jānis Kaijaks (Sr.). Leaders and producers of the theater – opera singer Ieva Viļuma and pianist Agija Ozoliņa-Kozlovska.
